As an employer, why would I take an Apprentice over my normal method of recruitment?

The world is becoming smaller and more competitive every day and in an increasingly competitive environment, any successful business must develop and maintain a skilled and motivated workforce.

Every business has its own unique requirements and finding the right staff to provide a real and relevant contribution can be a very difficult task.

This is where the Apprenticeship Programme can be of great help. Let's look at information to help you decide if an apprentice would be the correct choice for you.

Employer information

An Apprenticeship is a work based programme, designed by employers. With an apprentice programme you can train both your existing employees and any new staff that you intend to recruit in the future. For every apprentice there is a framework to follow consisting of the following:

  1. Level 2 or 3 NVQ Diploma, assessed in the workplace by observation, discussions and producing evidence to prove you are working to a required achievement level within your role.
  2. Key Skills for the personal development of an individual covering three specific areas: Application of Number, Communication and ICT
  3. A level 2 or 3 Technical Certificate containing the essential, generic background knowledge and understanding for a range of work roles and an understanding of the personal and interpersonal skills required to work effectively.
  4. Employee Rights and Responsibilities, covering legislation such as Health and Safety, data protection, discrimination, responsibilities and rights at work and other key policies and procedures to an Apprentice's job role.
  5. Personal Learning and Thinking skills, again generic skills that are essential to life, learning and work. These consist of: independent enquiry, reflective learning, creative thinking, team working, self-managing and effective participation.

There are up to 3 Levels of an Apprenticeship

  • Intermediate Level Apprenticeship - Level 2
  • Advanced Level Apprenticeship - Level 3
  • Higher Apprenticeship - Level 4

And remember, there are potentially financial incentives to take an apprentice
