The Youth Employment Initiative (YEI)

The Youth Employment Initiative (YEI) is a programme for participants aged between 15 to 29 and not in employment, education or training. 

On the YEI programme the courses that are available include:

Forklift Truck Routeway

  • IOSH & CSCS – this is a one week course covering IOSH Health and Safety and CSCS. This includes the CSCS exam and upon success a CSCS card will be applied for.
  • CCNSG – 2 day course covering CCNSG, this will allow the participant to be able to work on sites and within chemical plants.
  • NCFE Level 2 Certificate in plant operations (Construction)
  • Forklift truck – 2 week course covering Counterbalance and Reach Forklift truck. Includes 5 days of practical and theory work before the practical test.


You can access the following courses if required


  • Manual Handling –One day course to cover the Safety of Manual Handling in the work place.
  • Asbestos Awareness – One day course which covers the Safety of Asbestos Awareness and Removal.
  • Fire Warden – One day course.
  • Working at Height – One day course covering Working at Height and the Safety of Working at Height.

The Tees Valley Routeways Programme will support 925 young people aged 15 to 29 across the Tees Valley who are unemployed or inactive with the aim of progressing them into Education, Employment, Training or Self-Employment.


The programme is delivered by a consortium of organisations from the Public, Private and Voluntary Sector. The overall contract value is £2.67m with £1.00m from European Social Fund, £1.00m from Youth Employment Initiative and £0.67m of Match Funding. It is part-funded by the European Social Fund and supported under the Youth Employment Initiative.
